Custom Sidebar Icons in Finder
MacOS customisation is basically dead. Plenty of apps that used to work, no longer do. You can still have custom folder icons which is nice but I wanted custom sidebar icons for those folders, like the developer one.
I started googling around trying to find something for recent versions of MacOS and the only thing I found was this Reddit post outlining a method to do it with PNGs. Between me and Keir we were able to make it work not only with any standard SF Symbol but custom made ones as well.
You'll need Xcode installed to do this but the instructions relatively simple. I will say it's really flaky when building, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it just shows a random icon instead. All of the instructions are on the GitHub repository including some dandy screencasts from Keir.
@robb @keir way to go!
look at this icon @keir made for it 👌
@robb @keir definitely gonna have a play with this.
@robb @keir Very cool! Nice work! 😃
@rafa @robb 😀
@keir @rafa @robb are you releasing an app for this? I’d be first in line
@webjac @keir @rafa Unfortunately it’s not feasible to make an app to do this
@robb @keir Love having this! Here's mine so far 😎
@bramhill @robb looks great! 😍
@robb @keir …pretty quickly found a limitation, though: dragging a file over the icons in the sidebar (to either drop it directly there or to open that folder and drop in a subfolder) doesn't work 😕 Not a problem for Dropbox, so I guess not inherent to this type of Finder extension?
@robb @keir (also goodness I need to clean my laptop screen lol)
@bramhill I suspect that’s because the app does nothing except set the icon - there must be a way to do it, but it’s probably beyond my skill level.
